About the project
Website for Underfoot, an atlas of manhole covers from cities around the world. Each cover opens on its own screen as cast iron: the relief is built from a vector drawing, light follows the cursor, and the cover can be lifted to look into the well.
Covers are drawn in code from a data table and coloured by the utility they belong to. Quiet Swiss typography in one typeface keeps the iron in front.
